Lichtung - Break2021-22
Coventry Cathedral Broken Angel Project glass shard, Pi minicomputer, camera lens, led torch, projector |
In December 2020 curator Michael Tooby invited me to develop work for the new project ‘Broken Angel’ at Coventry Cathedral. This responds to the violent destruction of the 'Angel of the Eternal Gospel' during a break in in January 2020, one of John Hutton’s remarkable engraved angel and saint figures in the West Screen. The decision of the cathedral to not replace the panel and instead make room for new conversation and contemporary artists follows the ethos of the cathedral to find hope in the new and it resonates its fundamental belief in forgiveness. The people who destroyed the screen have never been found.
Lichtung - Break is an installation, which directly responds to the destruction of the glass and the cathedral’s idea of hope and reconciliation.
I have always been touched by the simple beauty and meaningfulness of broken glass and very often use it in my work.
For this installation I staged a broken piece of window glass by magnifying it through a camera lens and a Raspberry Pi computer and projecting it back onto the screen where the Angel used to be. Being sensitive to light the image appeared and disappeared over time, depending on the brightness in this open space.
